Twice a year, fashion designers in New York, London, Paris and Milan show their collections during a whirlwind event called Fashion Week. But it’s not just about the clothes. The hair trends you see right now started at one dynamic place: Spring/Summer 2012 Fashion Week. L’Oréal Professionnel Master Session Stylist Joseph DiMaggio was backstage where the action is—read on to get an insider look into the inspiring world of fashion week.

If there is one word I could use to describe the atmosphere backstage at a fashion show, it’s energy. Backstage is packed with models, hair stylists, makeup artists and photographers all prepping the models before their walk on the runway to showcase the designer’s newest collections. There’s no place in the world where I have seen that level of energy—and pressure! When you have no time to do 40 models’ hair the exact same way, and half the girls have come in with only five minutes to go and their hair is a mess from another show, it’s insane. During the runway show all those responsible for prepping now watch on a monitor as the models walk down the runway, and when I see them in their complete looks—the beautiful clothes, the makeup, and of course, the hair—and they’re owning it, it puts the biggest smile on my face. Everyone claps and cheers—it’s an overwhelming feeling of euphoria.

Fashion week is a pinnacle moment twice a year, where the trends are born, and those trends influence style across the country for the next season. I get to be there in the beginning, actually creating the trends right then and there, but anyone can follow fashion week online and in magazines, and stay on top of what’s happening in hair.
